Exclusive Adventure: A Private Heliskiing Journey in Kyrgyzstan

The Request

In early December, one of our esteemed clients placed a unique request: a private heliskiing trip for five days. The location didn’t matter, as long as it was within five hours of travel by his private jet. With Canada too far away and Scandinavian daylight too short, Asia became our focus. Among Asian countries, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the ideal destination due to its visa-free entry for both our client and our team.

Initial Planning

After setting a budget cap of $500,000, Roman, our lead organizer, flew to Bishkek at the beginning of December. It quickly became apparent that private helicopter companies were problematic. Leveraging his military network, Roman contacted local authorities. Through negotiations, the Air Force General agreed to rent one of their MI-8 helicopters. Although designed for over 24 passengers, it was more than adequate for our small team of two mountain guides, an avalanche specialist, myself, and our client.

Team Assembly and Preparation

Back in Switzerland, we assembled our team: two Swiss mountain guides, an avalanche specialist from the SLF institute, two local guides/supporters, and additional local staff. By mid-December, we flew to Bishkek for preparations. From there, we took the MI-8 helicopter to Karakol. Over the next few days, we conducted a detailed risk assessment and developed a comprehensive safety plan. This included creating snow profiles for avalanche forecasting, scouting various routes with the helicopter, visiting the local hospital, and organizing a rescue chain.

 The Accommodation Challenge

Finding suitable accommodation in Karakol proved challenging. The best hotel in town was not up to our standards. After extensive searching, we found a beautiful farmhouse near Karakol. We quickly rented it and transported new beds, a large TV, a hot tub, and other necessities from Bishkek.

The Adventure Begins

In early January, we picked up our client from Bishkek airport with the helicopter. He enjoyed numerous runs in perfect weather conditions. The MI-8’s size was a significant advantage, allowing us to stand comfortably inside, much like in a large ski gondola. The two pilots and the mechanic, who meticulously started the helicopter with countless buttons, did an outstanding job.

Creating New Heliskiing Routes

The Shentjang Massif now boasts many new heliskiing routes, most of which we were the first to explore with a high degree of safety. We didn’t miss the chance to enjoy a traditional Swiss cheese fondue in the middle of nowhere (see photo).
